The founder of Kidderminster’s Young Gloves Karate has received his British Empire Medal in recognition of his community work.
Justin Thomas was presented with the medal on Friday 30 October by Mrs Beatrice Grant, His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Worcestershire, according to the club.
The honour was announced in the 2026 New Year Honours List. Thomas founded Young Gloves Karate in 1999, and the club says its instructors have taught more than 5,000 people over the past 27 years.
Community work beyond karate
The club’s activities have included anti-bullying education, self-defence workshops, First Aid training and disability karate sessions, alongside charitable fundraising and community events.
It says members have raised more than £90,000 for good causes and aim to reach £100,000 by the end of 2027. Thomas has taken part in challenges including half marathons, long-distance walks and sponsored cycling.
Speaking about the medal, he said: “I’m incredibly proud and humbled to receive this honour, but I see it as recognition of what so many people have achieved together over the years.”
He thanked instructors, students, families, volunteers and community partners for their support.
The club also reported that six of its members represented England at the ICO World Championships in France in 2026, returning with 24 medals: 13 gold, seven silver and four bronze.
Thomas said he would continue teaching, fundraising and helping people take part in community activities.
